STAY FASCINATED
I came across the Public Enemy logo today, having just shared a line from Rick Rubin’s book, The Creative Act, with my girlfriend. I’ll have to paraphrase but it was something like, “be fascinated with the obvious.” Public Enemy is dope. That’s the most obvious statement I chose to dwell in.
Like most people worth listening to I had a big brother that showed me the things worth paying attention to, and that’s how I found out about Public Enemy.. He showed me “Fear Of A Black Planet,” but I chose to buy Spin Doctors. Something about Public Enemy was scary, like a path I wasn’t ready to take, a sun too hot, but PUBLIC ENEMY LOGO was burned deeper than my retina .I’ve had that the emotional connection a few times, when I saw the Dead Kennedy logo, the poster for Taxi Driver, an IRAK sticker.
Dwelling in the fascination I had with Public Enemy took me back to writing all the words to “911 Is A Joke,” buying Pirate hats through the years. It took me back to the summer of 1991 when Edward Furlong wore a PE shirt in Terminator 2. My fascination took me right back to that summer of 1991, when dirt bikes and truck races had Schwarzenegger moving past explosions, the new Guns and Roses track “You Could Be mine” the T-1000 being liquid metal.
I came out of this fascination with PE determined that Next Four Days needs to bring projects all together like T2 in a summer theatre, have purpose like Chuck D, not waste money like a Spin Doctor’s tape., to stay fascinated, refuse to lose. Here’s your ticket. Hear the drummer get wicked.
